Organization

Basic organization principles for Energistics special interest groups.

Charter

To ensure that each SIG remains current and relevant, SIGs will be chartered for renewable six-month or one-year periods.

At the end of each charter period, the SIG leaders and Energistics meet to determine if the SIG will continue (or perhaps has reached a milestone and will suspend operations) and the level of facilitation resources required from Energistics for the next charter period, based on anticipated level of activity.

A SIG may develop brief charter documents to spell out the specific its specific terms.

Organization

Each SIG is typically organized as follows:

Committee or Team Name
Responsibilities
Steering Committee
Responsible for oversight and direction of the SIG and its standards development activities. Meets quarterly or more often if needed.
Executive or Operations Team
Elected by the Steering Committee to direct daily operations of the SIG. Reports to the Steering Committee.
Technical Team
Composed of business and technical members who are responsible for defining functionality and technical specifications for the standards.  Coordinates with the Executive Team and reports to the Steering Committee.
Work Group(s) or sub-teams
Created by the Steering Committee or Technical Team as needed to work specific, defined issues. Multiple Work Groups may exist and report to their respective parent team.

Operational Guidelines

Each SIG works in a commercially neutral and collaborative manner to determine and define consensus best practices as they apply to industry work practices, industry standards, and supporting commercial products and service offerings.

Energistics actively facilitates each SIG so that sets of agreed-upon best practices and recommendations are realized, published, and promoted periodically. Results are published along with supporting analysis with these audiences in mind:

  • Industry, with recommendations for interim and longer-term practices and procedures
  • Solution providers, with recommendations for features and standards compliance
  • Standards groups/projects (Energistics and others), with recommendations for new or enhanced industry standards

Participation and Fees

SIG participation is open to all Energistics members.

SIG fees cover the facilitation resources and services provided by Energistics. For each SIG, an agreed-upon level of facilitation resources is determined for the next six-month or one-year charter period, based on anticipated level of activity.

For more information about SIG fees, see the Schedule B of the Energistics Membership Agreement.
