A word from the President & CEO
2018 has got off to a very good start. It is only 8 weeks into the new year and already we have a lot to talk about. First and foremost, our new website has launched and
with it our new logo and tag line. More about this exciting new development below. We continue to engage with industry decision-makers to increase support for the consortium and our mission, and we have recently participated in industry events in Houston,
Abu Dhabi, Singapore, London, Paris and Lisbon, with more to come.
I am excited to welcome on board two
new colleagues who will be connecting with companies in North America and Europe, and we are very pleased to also welcome some significant new
members to Energistics. Finally, I would like to mention some recent papers highlighting the contribution of our data transfer standards to data quality, reduced personnel
on board, HSE, cost reductions and drilling KPIs.
Cheers!
Ross Philo

A new logo and a new tag line
Today we are launching a new look for Energistics, which includes the new logo and tag line displayed at the top of this newsletter.
The arrows in the tagline symbolize data movement, while the intricate interlacing of colors and lines in the logo conveys the blending of data and disciplines across the whole upstream activity, made possible by our spectrum of data standards and their common
technical architecture.
Adopt > Advance
> Accelerate refers to the benefits to be gained by the industry through leveraging the full power of a standardized data ecosystem. Adoption of standards empowers companies to advance their goal of digital transformation, which in turn accelerates the
pace of exploration, development and production of hydrocarbon assets.

Launching our new website
To accompany the new logo and tag line, we’re pleased to be launching a new website. The redesign is intended to engage visitors from all backgrounds—both technical and
business—to help them explore and understand our standards and the value they bring, and to quickly answer their questions. For those already working with our standards, you’ll still find the detailed technical content you need, but we have endeavored to make
it easier to navigate with a more structured organization.

Article in World Oil
The January issue features an excellent article authored by Thomas Halland, Kjell Inge Meisal (Statoil), Ted Abramsen (Kongsberg) and Pete Morrison (Baker Hughes) titled "New data transfer protocol improves drilling support and safety", documenting a test
of ETP version 1.1 linking a North Sea rig with Statoil's onshore Realtime Drilling Data Center using Baker Hughes' BEACON servers and Kongsberg's SiteCom systems. The results are outstanding, with a lag time reduced to only 1 second (compared to 10-15 seconds
with the prior SOAP protocol). The improved transfer rates are seen by Statoil as critical to the goal of having fewer personnel on board, which drives lower costs and improves HSE.

New Energistics team members
We are glad to welcome two outstanding industry experts who will be contributing their
knowledge to establish new relationships with actors in the upstream industry.
- Dennis O'Neill, Houston,
has worked with service companies, supermajors and professional services firms, holding both technical and senior management positions in software
development, data management and service delivery in the domains of seismic, drilling, well logging and reservoir description.
- Dave Wallis, UK, was involved in OFS Portal before its inception as he was part of
the 12 man multi-company team tasked with the conceptualisation, design and creation of OFS Portal. Dave served on the OFS Portal board from its early days until April 2003. Dave was also heavily involved in the Oil & Gas eCommerce standards body – PIDX from

IOGP Publishes GN24 on Vertical Data and Updated DHSS Standards
The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (IOGP) has announced the release of Geomatics Guidance Note 24: Vertical Data in Oil and Gas
Applications, as well as the updated version of the Guidelines for the conduct of offshore drilling hazard site surveys (DHSS).
Guidance Note 24 provides advice on best practices for
using vertical references. Vertical references are heights or depths given relative to familiar well-known elevations like “mean sea level” or “kelly bushing”. The Energistics standards follow the IOGP guidance on this matter and their advice is incorporated
into the Common Technical Architecture which underlies the new generations of WITSML, PRODML and RESQML.
