Energistics Collaboration With The OSDU™ Forum

The Open Group ODSU™ Forum set out to deliver a Data Platform that leverages existing standards as a foundational precept to both accelerate delivery and leverage the many years of industry expertise embodied in them. The Energistics Consortium community is helping to deliver successive releases of the OSDU Data Platform.

The Energistics Integration Workstream [launched]

A number of initiatives have been submitted and approved to ensure the smooth uptake within the OSDU platform of the WITSML™ standard for real-time drilling and well-site operational data and RESQML™ standard for subsurface and reservoir data. These initiatives fall under the general umbrella of the Energistics Integration Workstream, consisting of several projects. As such, this places Energistics within the R3 core team as extension developers and platform contributors. Requirements for Energistics standards that emanate from these initiatives are channeled back to the Energistics Work Groups that define each set of standards. Dedicated Energistics developer resources are also being allocated to OSDU initiatives.

Bi-weekly meetings [on the Forum calendar]

These meetings are now on the schedule for the Energistics integration workstream, and on the alternate weeks there is a specific meeting for the Reservoir Domain Data Management Service (Reservoir DDMS) initiative.

The JSON style guide [in progress]

The OSDU platform has adopted JSON as its format for data. The Energistics data standards are based on a common architecture using XML, which remains the format of reference for standardized data transfers for now. This is because a related technology called XML Schema formally describes XML documents, allowing applications to use it as a reference to check the document. Motivated to accommodate the need for guidance in implementing Energistics standards in the OSDU data platform, the Energistics’ community is in the process of providing JSON definitions of the XML standards to ensure a consistent implementation based on RESQML and WITSML.

The R2 manifest generator for standard-format files [available]

The R2 manifest generator has been delivered, it produces the boilerplate entitlement data for an R2 manifest which matches R2 Python script expectations.

The R3 ingestion of standard-format files [R3 delivery]

This covers both WITSML and RESQML XML files for import into the OSDU data platform, ensuring that the correct objects are created and the metadata is translated properly.

The Post-R3 reservoir domain data initiative [active, delivery post-R3]

This will include RESQML parsers, DDMS, ingestion pipelines and more.

The reservoir domain initiative covers a large scope and will require a significant amount of contributions from member organizations, involving subject matter experts, developers, architects and documentation specialists. Energistics, Equinor and Emerson have taken the lead and encourage other companies to join the project and contribute to it.

Energistics’ Units of Measurement and normal reference entities [project]

Energistics is the custodian of a decades-long initiative to catalog and define the many units of measure that are used across upstream E&P. This will be incorporated into the OSDU data platform as part of the Frame of Reference services.
